Step-by-Step Guide to Manually Clean Carpets

What You’ll Need:

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Bucket of warm water
  • Mild washing-up liquid or carpet shampoo
  • White vinegar (optional, for odours or stains)
  • Bicarbonate of soda (optional, for deodorising)
  • Soft-bristled brush or carpet brush
  • Clean white cloths or microfibre towels
  • Spray bottle (optional)
  • Fan (optional, for drying)

Step 1: Clear and Vacuum the Area

Remove all furniture or obstacles from the carpet. Thoroughly vacuum the area to remove loose dirt, dust and debris. Go over high-traffic areas more than once if needed.

Step 2: Spot Test Your Cleaner

Before using any cleaning solution on the whole carpet, test it on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t cause discolouration or damage.

Step 3: Pre-Treat Stains (If Needed)

For stains, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Apply directly to the stain and allow it to sit for 5–10 minutes. Blot (do not rub) the area with a clean cloth until the stain lifts.

Step 4: Prepare Your Cleaning Solution

In a bucket, mix:

  • 1 tablespoon of washing-up liquid or carpet shampoo
  • 1 litre (about 4 cups) of warm water

(Optional: Add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to help with odours.)

Step 5: Scrub the Carpet

Dip your brush or cloth into the solution, wring it out well, and gently scrub the carpet in small sections. Use circular motions and avoid over-wetting the fibres.

Step 6: Rinse with Clean Water

Use a second cloth soaked in plain warm water to go over the cleaned areas. This helps remove any remaining soap, which could otherwise attract more dirt.

Step 7: Blot Excess Moisture

With dry towels, press firmly into the carpet to soak up moisture. You can also place a towel down and step on it to absorb water more effectively.

Step 8: Allow to Dry

Open windows or use fans to help the carpet dry faster. Avoid walking on it until completely dry to prevent dirt from reattaching.

Optional Step: Deodorise with Bicarbonate of Soda

Once dry, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the carpet. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly to remove any remaining odours.

This method is an easy and cost-effective way to freshen your carpets and keep them looking their best—no professional equipment required!
